The letter of James is profoundly and pervasively infused with the teaching of Jesus.
One of the commentators I’ll be using a lot, Donald Burdick, has a remarkable table listing 34 times James uses the words of Jesus or alludes to them. In fact some see this letter as James’ application of the Sermon on the Mount to the situation of his readers.
34 times in five chapters. That’s a lot. Sorta makes you think he knew Jesus pretty well, doesn’t it?
