Heart Prep for Sunday, October 20, 2013

So we’re talking this week about a whole chapter of Matthew, Matthew 10:1-42 in which Jesus calls his disciples and gives them instructions about going out and representing him in a fallen world. I’m calling this message ‘Rules for a Troubled Road,’

I’ve taken the liberty of including a little commentary from Hannah Gronseth this week.

Carry His Love – Caedmon’s Call

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Mark 8:34-37 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37For what can a man give in return for his soul?

Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken – Indelible Grace – Hannah says “Yes, you should go to their concert at Trinity in January! 🙂 (this video is of our same version, but there is talking on some of the interludes. Side note: The guy who talks the most was my former college pastor when I lived in Nashville and I know/knew most of the guys singing on this video personally. This video makes me nostalgic and it is beautiful on so many levels.”

Onward Christian Soldiers – This is a great boys/men’s choir and while we will sing the same melody – the tempo, the arrangement, the drums and everything else about it will be different. Unfortunately every YouTube video is different as well. Enjoy the British accents and pure soprano voices!

Matthew 10:1, 5-9 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. . . .5These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. 9Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, 10no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food.

Matthew 10:16-20 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
