Day 3: Compassionate and merciful
One of the qualities we long for in a hero is compassion. We want a hero who will be able to see the needs around him and respond with caring and concern, taking into account the hurt and weakness of those he is sent to help. In literature, it is people like Robin Hood, Frodo, or Atticus Finch who really grab our hearts. In Scripture both God the Father and Jesus are revealed as this kind of compassionate hero.
Read Psalm 103:1-19 and take note of the many phrases which show the compassion and mercy of the Father. Which of these offers you comfort right now?
Read Matthew 9:35-38, Matthew 14:13-21 and Luke 7:11-17. How did Jesus express or respond to his feelings of compassion? Which of these speaks to your needs right now?
