Heart Prep for Sunday, August 28, 2011

Last Sunday we started a new series in 1st and 2nd Kings, looking at the ministries of Elijah and Elisha. Sorry I didn’t get a heart prep blog up before that start. This blog will include a couple of things I prepared for last week, plus heart prep for this week.

Here’s the title slide for the series:

Here’s the slide showing the history of the ‘kingdom era’ in Israel. Elijah and Elisha were active in northern kingdom, Israel while Ahab was the king of Israel.

Here’s a slide illustrating one of the key ideas of the series: that God intervenes (through Jesus) in the downward spiral(s) of his people.

This week we will be looking at the account of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath. Here’s a video (distributed by the Mormons, but well done) depicting the story:

Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath

We will be worshiping God as the one who provides daily for our needs:
(Pray then like this:)
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
For yours is the kingdom
and the power
and the glory, forever.
Amen.”

Children of the Heavenly Father (Hannah Jackson comments: this version is by Plumb and is so beautiful. We won’t make it this sad, but the mood is incredible and it might be a cool one for the congregation to meditate on for the heart prep.)
